  • What's one small thing you changed that made your dog noticeably happier?

I've been thinking a lot lately about how the little things we do every day can have a surprisingly big impact on our dogs' overall wellbeing and mood. Not the big stuff like
  • training classes or vet visits, but the small, consistent habits that just become part of the routine.
  • For my dog, it was adding a short sniff walk in the morning where I let him lead and stop wherever he wants. No rushing, no agenda. It sounds minor but he seems genuinely more
  • relaxed and content throughout the rest of the day. I read somewhere that letting dogs sniff and explore at their own pace is mentally tiring in a really good way, and I think that tracks with what I've seen.
  • I'm curious what small changes or routines other dog owners have found that made a noticeable difference for their pup. Maybe it's a specific time of day you play, a particular game,
  • a feeding adjustment, or just how you greet them when you come home. Whatever it is I'd love to hear about it.
  • Especially interested in hearing from people with older dogs or dogs with anxiety, since those cases seem like the small stuff really matters. Drop your goto habit below thx!

  • cambiokeys We spend at least five to ten minutes snuggling in the morning before getting the day rolling. She loves the attention and the scratches and her days seem to go a lot smoother. She has a history of selective hearing but listens a lot better after snuggle sessions.
  • She also loves to watch the sunset in the backyard. Every evening, weather permitting, is spent out on her lead while she calmly watches the sunset and the critters in the field behind us (deer, foxes, groundhogs, etc) while I read or do some work in the garden. Once it's down, she goes immediately to bed.
  • browneyedredhead 1968 For mine it's letting her go back and forth with me bringing in groceries. She thinks grocery day is a blast lol
  • snakeoildriller Having a very quiet conversation while tickling his ears.
  • Away-Ad3792 My parents come to visit them once a week while I'm at work. They don't walk them, just a little yard time and then kick it with them for about an hour, just petting them and watching TV (mostly in Spanish). They
  • LOVE that. I can tell because they are much more relaxed all week. And on weeks when they can't come they seem a little restless. Like "what happened to my special time?". Parents lost their little pup a while back and decided no more new pets
  • because it's not fair if pet outlives them. They still have some older cats but they like to have some "pup time" as well.
  • Kit_Foxfire I stopped petting her... I knew she preferred treats over pets for rewards but one day she was looking at me like she was dreading what was coming next (nose down, huge eyes, ears flat to the side) and it just clicked.
  • So I asked her if I could pet her as I put my hand next to her head without touching her and she ignored it. I took it as a "no".
  • So i started asking every time I wanted to pet her and she'd either duck down and put her head in my hands with happy closed eyes, or just ignore it Ever since she's been cuddling with me when she use to get up if I layed next to her.
  • Lol I've never owned a dog that I had to ask to pet! It took me a very long time to get used to it.
  • Mademoise11e Hose time! My dog LOVES biting and chasing water from the hose. It has to be the full stream though, any other setting is not acceptable!
  • fuxandfriends I rearranged my room and moved my bed away from the window but didn't realize how much my dog enjoyed watching the squirrels and overseeing her kingdom. So I got a little storage ottoman perch and she's been
  • hopping off the bed from 5- 6:30am just to watch out the window. My grandma always told me a dog with a view is a happy dog, guess she knew what she was talking about!
  • Cissycat12 Choices. Choose the toy, the treat, play or walkie, which direction on the walk. We give choices when we can and find her willing to cooperate knowing she does get a say when we can.
  • PawDose Teaching myself that every walk didn't have to be about distance. Once I stopped rushing and let my dog sniff as much as he wanted, he became noticeably calmer and happier.
  • Turns out 20 minutes of reading the neighborhood newspaper was more valuable to him than an extra mile
